Geritol and Iron

While there are plenty of internet rumors suggesting that taking Geritol can miraculously improve fertility, even the manufacturer has this to say:
“Will the use of Geritol® increase my sex drive or fertility?
There’s no evidence that Geritol® can increase fertility and we don’t make that claim. We’re not sure how the rumor got started, but there’s no truth to it.”
Geritol, made by GlaxoSmithKline, is simply a multivitamin containing iron. Chances are, the prenatal vitamin you are taking is superior. Here’s how a few compare:
- Geritol Complete: 16 mg iron
- Geritol Tonic: 18 mg iron
- PrimaCare (prescription prenatal vitamin): 30 mg
- Rainbow Light Just Once (over-the-counter prenatal vitamin): 30 mg
- Solgar Prenatal (over-the-counter prenatal vitamin): 27 mg
A large study was published in 2006, examining the effects of supplemental iron (in multivitamins or other supplements) on infertility. The study concluded that women who took supplemental iron had a significantly lower risk (approximately half) of ovulatory infertility.
Bottom line: Take a good prenatal tablet, containing sufficient iron along with other essential vitamins and minerals, and skip the Geritol.

Hello,
It’s not the iron in Geritol that is supposed to help women concieve, it’s the folic acids. From what I have read about concieving, a woman should increase her folic acid intake to prepare her body for concieving and for pregnancy. Geritol contains the folic acids regiments that women needs. Therefore, a woman taking Geritol has a better chance at concieving than a woman not taking any type of vitamin supplement at all. It’s not a known fact and studies do not show that this is true, but I have about 3 friends who were preganant within a month of taking Geritol.

My boss at work told me about Geritol and that it helped her concieve a child. Right now, she’s about 5 months after having difficulty getting pregnant. I have been having problems concieving and my boss told me to pick some up at the local drugstore. After hearing and reading about this “baby in a bottle” pills, I really think there is a truth behind Geritol, I just think that GlaxoSmith does not want to admit it.

I know of one family member and a close friend of the family who have taken geritol and it WORKED for them. I say the manufacture do not claim it as a method for women getting pregnant because it may not work for all women. But, I have heard a lot of success stories. My boyfriend and I have been currently trying to get pregnant. I have been taking geritol for almost a month I am going to buy a pregnancy test tonight after work. Hopefully the baby dust fairy sprinkled some on me and to all who are trying !!!!!!!!!

Just started takin Geritol yesterday, and let me tell you>>>>>IT TASTES DISGUISTING!!!!!!!!!! I cant tell you whats worse, the taste or the SMELL. Im takin Geritol Tonic, which is the liquid form. its not bad after the 1st week. but before you take it have a glass of juice and/or a peppermint ready. then you get your tonic ready and hurry and down in then pop in the mint or take a drink of juice then the peppermint. it helps ALOT before you get used to the taste.

Well I just started taking geritol 2 days ago! I’m currently not TTC but I’ll start again in August! I’m taking this time out to learn my body! But soon as I get my BFP, I’ll update you guys! If it doesn’t work for everybody, that means that there isn’t a baby in every bottle! I just pray that there’s a baby in my bottle lol!

I too have been trying to conceive I already have two girls. And my sister told me about geritol so I research it and I finally went to walgreens and bought a bottle for about $8 bucks and I bought the tonic started taking it daily its smells and its taste like a mouth full of vitamins!ugh! my cycle had started to become irregular from 30 days to 33 days to 47 days so I started december 1st it regulated my cycle back to 28 days I started ovulating my nails grew my skin look better and I’m anemic so it help with that. My husband and I haven’t tried to conceive this month but I’m hoping to concieve in April or May 2011! The old wives tales is that there is a baby in every bottle! Geritol works I know so many mutual and close friends who took it and conceive its vitamins iron folic acid all the things Dr’s recommend you to do when your ttc good luck everyone!!:)

Hi Ladies. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for over 4 yrs now. We have 2 children ages 8 and 6. I had an early miscarrage before ea. I have PCOS and a prolactin producing pituitary tumor. Plus my PCOS caused a thick lining to my uterus which a ob/gyn i had had refused to do a dnc so went to a new gyno and had one finally done in aug. Have been on metformin for nearly a yr for the PCOS but no luck my niece told me about geritol. Her aunt told her so she and I are both going to start geritol. We both are praying that this will give us the baby we both have prayed for.

Been trying to concieve for 5months since my husband and I got married in May. I have one child already, a three year old son, but my husband would like another child now. I started taking geritol tonic yesterday my af hadnt come yet and it’s been irregular since I started ttc. I took 2 tests both (-) so hopefully this will help make it come, and the baby too! Ladies try a herb call macca and pre seed also use a instead soft cup hubby can take macca also. Join two week wait website! I hear so many success stories! I used all three items and today af is suppose to hit. I brought a pregnancy test I’m so scared to take it I don’t want a bfn! Been taking the Geritol tonic for 5 days now. To help with the flavor i have something to drink and a peppermint ready BEFORE i even pour the tonic into its cup. Then you hurry up and take the tonic take a drink and chew up the peppermint. it doesn’t take bad then or linger, plus i am making my husband take men 1 a day vitamins.

Ok so here is my update if you saw my post 54. from above, af came Oct. 15 and stayed unti the 20th. Dh and I bd the following day and almost every other day after even til now. I have continued taking one shot of geritol tonic in the morning after breakfast….and although af isn’t due yet and its too early to test I have a feeling I may already be pregnant. about four days ago I had some stomach pains as if I would get my period (my face started breaking out too) but it was way too early. I have also experience headaches and sleepiness. My stomach has a sensitivity now like when touched or laid on so I have been tossing and turning a lot at night. My husband said its so bad I even move his hand off of my stomach when im sleep at night and he tries to cuddle (something I did from beginning to end pregnancy with my now 3 year old son and my last preg from 2 years ago that didnt go full term). I also smelled my subway that I often get for lunch yesterday and didnt want to finish it because I suddenly became nauseated by the bread smell. I could possibly be making all this up in my mind…but I dont feel like I am because even when im not concious of it (sleep) I still experience these small symptoms. Maybe geritol really works….I have about another 13-14 days before af is due. I will update you all again on my result. Best of louck tob all of you as well.

i am on my 3rd bottle of the 4oz bottle of Geriol Tonic. AF is supposed to come on Thursday. I am praying that it worked this month cause my nipples are sore and my sense of smell seem to be increased. If not i will just keep trying. My husband is loving all the attention he gets. Except when i force him to take his mens multivitamin. My prayers are with ya’ll… It takes someone who is feeling your pain every month when trying to conceive as well to understand your pain and frustration.

Eat all during the day I drink a lot of water all I be wanting is chips with pickle juice and anything that I can put hot sauce on. what does this mean? Well af was 3 days late and my nipples hurt and i was getting sick taking the geritol and was wanting strawberry with chocolate milk shakes and mixing onion ring sauce with ranch dressing. but af came and and it hurt so bad. i don’t know if i had an early mc since before i got pregnant with my 2 kids i had a mc either in the first few days

I had similar problems this month jenbel, this is crazy…i was having weird things going on like 2 weeks ago but then it suddenly went away as well…. the last issue was a shooting pain in my left abdomen and hip then after that day nothing else,maybe I was just ovulating i dont know….my period was due yesterday and it still hasn’t come yet…but i feel as if it will today. maybe the geritol was just regulating my cycle….because prior to taking it and since me and my husband started trying to concieve it was late every month for a week to 2 weeks. i took a pregnancy test like 4 days ago which was negative, so im pretty sure im not pregnant. hopefully af will come down today so i can atleast say im on the road to being regular again. I have one unopened bottle of geritol left so i will re start when my period comes again…..but i’m really going to try my best not to worry about it anymore cuz its so frustrating feeling like something is wrong every month. Even trying not to worry about it is easier said then done, because the minute i think i’m not thinking about it a new weird symptom or pain arrives….i’ve never had this much uncomfortability in my skin in my life. I’ve decided to hug and hold my three year old, and be happy with him for right now….this is waaaayyyy too stressful. Best of luck to you all though.

Ok I need help, I still haven’t got my af yet so I am now 6 days late, I took a One step early detection test 3 days after being late, but i dont think i urinated on it enough, because the result didnt show up until a hour later, and had a very faint yes line, then i retested again the next morning with a equate brand test and it was (-). I had been having on and off cramps almost everyday, but still no af, then today i noticed a clear stetchy mucous after wiping. (sorry tmi) accompanied by cramps again. So I am wondering does this mean I am just now ovulating this late in my cycle? I know the stretchy stuff usually means ovulation is near, and I have never had cycles longer then 32 days until 6 months ago when we started trying to concieve….my af has been late evry month since we started…..could it be ovulation this late in my cycle? I need clarity. I would go to the doctor, but it costs too much for a non-emergency situation. Any help or advice would be great. Thanx.

Still taking Geritol tonic. my period is supposed to start in 4-5 days. Last night I had some bad cramping on my lower left of stomach. I am praying that this geritol will work. If not i am gonna see if my gynocologist can run some blood work and see whats going on. I know my PCOS and hyperthroidism and the pituitary tumor make it hard to conceive but I had them when I got pregnant with my daughter and possibly with my son. I’ve been trying for so long. I know my husband LOVES the extra attention but its hard on my mentality. I am praying that all of us will be blessed with the baby we dream of and that God has planned for us.

Just try to take it easy jenbel and not worry about it so much. things happen like they do for a good reason, everything is in good timing. I stopped taking the geritol altogether and decided to just let it happen when it happens because there is no logical reason why i should be driving myself crazy trying to hurry up and get pregnant. I have a wonderful son, and husband. I have much to be thankful for….so I am just breathing easy and leaving it up to God…..it will happen someday, and when it does I will be ready. Im 23 years of age and I and my bf have been ttc for over a year he thinks something is wrong because i’m not pregnant yet and I fear that I cant get pregnant…I went to the doc. and the nurse told me about Geritol and how it helps women with infertility. My periods are irregular n the only thing that helps regulate them is taking bcp. I stopped taking bcp back in the summer of 2011. I started my bottle of Geritol Tonic (liquid form) today 01/01/12! I’m hoping and praying that there is a baby in my bottle 🙂 I am excited bc i am almost sure that this will work! i’m already fantasizing about being pregnant and having my first child with the man that I love sooo much 🙂 I take it in the morning and at night before bed

Well this month my period was a week late but the aunt flo arrived. But this month was a bad one. I had spotting and light bleeding at first then a little heavier then back to spotting. And my back was killing me. Here it is a week later and i started to have left hip pain yesterday with a little bloody discharge. I go on the 2nd of March to see my gyno. Praying that something is not wrong.

I started taking Geritol Complete 12/16/11. I take it everyday after breakfast. My Dh had been away and just returned on 1/18/12. Af was 1/16-1/20 and we have been bd everyday since.According to my OV calculator today is the day but we will continue to bd everyday just in case.I will keep you guys updated.Babydust to all!!!

I have been taking Geritol Tonic since Sept. but have slack off this past month. so much has been going on with the passing of my father in-law right after the new year. But the past few months my periods have been really short. I also stopped taking the metformin for my PCOS. Told my husband it was time to take a break. Period is due on Sunday the 5th. but I have been having some period like cramping and my nipples have been sore. It would be kinda funny if this was to be the month that i had conceived. Especially since my husband and I have been more apart than together these past few weeks. Will let ya’ll know if I found my baby dust when I wasn’t looking for it

I took geritol for 2 months, and I didnt get pregnant. I did realize that stressing about getting pregnant was stressing me so bad that my periods were irregular. So I quit taking geritol and decided to just relax and let nature run its course. Since then my periods have finally began to regulate again (which havent been regular since we started ttc in may 11). I have a wonderful 3 year old son and a awesome husband which is more than enough to be thankful for I will just have to patient and wait for my time again. I still have my fourth bottle of geritol sitting in my medicine cabinet. It may have worked for some, but it didnt work for me. To each its own. Best of luck.

Me and my husband have been together for 10 years, never once using protection. We have been to the dr several times to see if there were any problems with both of us. we had 2 IUIs done and both failed. all of our tests came back good. but we still haven’t had any luck in the baby department. a friend of mine told me the other day about geritol after her co-worker mentioned that it worked for her. i will start taking it tomorrow, hopefully this works!

I posted on here a while back, my last two messages were 72, and 74 where i basically explained i was taking a break from stressing about TTC. Well I still have a bottle of geritol sitting in my cabinet untouched. Since I stopped trying I ended up getting pregnant in December but it ended quickly with a miscarriage at 5 weeks. My cycle was a little wierd for a month then regular again for a month and now I am PREGNANT AGAIN! I really believe the reason why it wasnt happening before was because I was thinking way to much about it….my periods were late every month once I started obsessing which meant I probably wasnt ovulating normally hence not getting pregnant. As soon as I took a break and allowed the Lord to do his will, I became pregnant….an even though I lost that one, it gave me hope that everything is ok down there and it WILL HAPPEN. After that I clearly became more fertile as well considering it only took one more period before i fell pregnant AGAIN. Take it from me ladies, take a breather, relax, try not to think about it and just have fun with hubby. Stop taking geritol and whatever else has failed to get you pregnant thus far. Keep up the prenatals and live free. I believe if you take my advice you will all be pregnant sooner….best of luck.

Oh and for the record my husband and I had been trying since May 2011 with no success until I stopped trying so hard and just decided to have fun! 🙂 prior to letting go on TTC, my period was late every month with crazy symptoms that I obviously created from wanting it so bad, only to be disappointed with (-) again and again. I took geritol for 2 or 3 months with no success also, only thing it did do was make my urine smell funny (sorry tmi). I hope you all take my advice. It can be easier said then done, but its the best way to ultimately get what you want which is pregnant. Oh, and I prayed for it too, I said “Lord you know what I want, i’ve tried and I have failed so I leave it up to you Lord, bless me with a baby if it is your will, i know only you can bless me with the child i desire. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.” A combination of the both of those is probably what got me pregnant that very next month….

Went to the dr on the 2nd. I told her where my period in Feb was painful and i know something wrong happened. She and I both believed that I had an early miscarriage. I have had 2 before both times were before i had my son and before my daughter. It is still hard to deal with. I am still gonna continue with the geritol though.

I started taking geritol back in august or sept. I have been taking it on and off. Had an early miscarriage in feb.a month after the death of my father in law. i felt pregnant but didn’t really know i was until my painful period when the dr pretty much confirmed it. So far i am 33 days late but am scared to take test. Was in a bad car accident on tuesday may 1 when a woman plowed into the back of my 2011 ford focus 5 min after dropping my kids off at school.. Needless to say the car was totalled. They did a urine test but i know they aren’t always accurate. i was 8 wks pregnant with my son and it didn’t show on a blood test 5 days before it showed on a urine test. lol. I am scared to hope that i am. Since the accident i have been having some lite spotting on and off with brown discharge when i use the bathroom. Scared to find out if i am and having it be positive and having to worry about something being wrong. Gonna try to wait another week or 2 before testing again.

3 years ago I wanted to become pregnant. I stopped taking birthcontrol when a friend told me about geritol. 3 months later I was pregnant. For the past 2 years I’ve been trying to conceive with 2 failed IUIs. Again, my mom asked if I was taking geritol. I started back taking the geritol and 3 mnths later, I’m pregnant again. Everybody is different. The doctor did not see any reasonable explanation of why I wasn’t getting pregnant. Therefore, I can’t say that this would work for all, but it’s worth giving it a try.

I have been taking geritol on and off since sept. As of now I am 8 wks late but nothing is showing on the pregnancy tests and my gyno won’t do an ultrasound and the family clinic didn’t order one either just ordered a quantative hcg test. She asked me if I feel pregnant and I do so she changed some of my meds since I would be going into the 2nd trimester if I am.. Will let ya’ll know what comes up. I feel pregnant and my pants aren’t fitting no more and my boobs hurt and itch and craving fruit and cranberry/grape juice and multi vitamins make me sick now..

Hi everyone. Thought I would give you all an update. 1 day before me being 9 weeks late I felt a sudden drop and started gushing blood. I know it was a miscarriage. I don’t know if anyone will believe this but I had dreamed weeks earlier of having a baby girl in my arms and being asked about the other baby and telling them that something was wrong with him. This past weekend I prayed to God for an explanation cause I knew I was pregnant even though the tests were coming up negative and i knew something felt wrong. That night I dreamed of a little girl asking me when does she get to come back. And then on the other side of me was a little boys in braces from his chest all the way down. She told me he couldn’t talk and his eyes were blank/unfocused. I know now why this happened. I know it wasn’t his time. That he wouldn’t have been happy here and she had to go with him since he couldn’t talk. I am taking the geritol tonic again and taking iron tablets at night cause i cann’t stop the bleeding and it is going on 2 weeks. I am also gonna start a womans tea from Krogers. It contains rasberry tea leaves and rosehips.

Your pregnancy tests are coming up negative because your body isn’t producing enough pregnancy hormone and that’s why you have lost them 😦 take some pre natal vitamins also and the second you are late get to the gyno they need to help you get meds to keep the baby and will consider you high risk…

thanks nicole. I figure god didn’t want it to show that way i wouldn’t get all excited just to end it in heartbreak. Just makes me mad that i went to one hospital the night of the miscarriage and one dr was gonna do ultrasound but she had to leave early and the other dr wouldn’t do anything not even an exam based on the urine test, After 2 weeks of bleeding another hospital listed it as an undiagnosed pregnancy and did an exam and ultrasound even though it was too late….

If not please know that it is hard to have a healthy pregnancy unless you wait a couple months before becoming pregnant again. I work in a Maternity Care clinic and we recommend woman wait to allow their uterus to mend. This is the advice of the MDs not myself.

Been TTC for 5years now i stated taking Geritol on 07/17/2013 and tomorrow is 08/17/2013 so its been a month… my breast is having pain that i never felt before and my legs usually hurts the day before my AF and a lot of cramping usually happens but this time around no leg pains or cramping
i stated to feel movement in my lower belly like bubbles poping but it was not gas cause it went on for about a week and a half now i feel bloated ..i started getting turn on at times and discharging a lot around 3pm every afternoon (tmi) after taking the pills i took a pill in a half and when my period came on i took 2 pills a day . hopefully there a BABY in my bottle…. baby dust to all ..dont give up ladies

When I conceived my daughter, I took it the first day of my period all the way up until, I got the smiley face on the ov predictor…I wrote everthing down back then we I was TTC so my notes said…BD on April 30, 2009 – spotting on May 15 (bright pink)…got BFP May 18, 2009!! Had my daughter in January..

I like it because of the iron and energy I get from it. So what there saying has no effect on anything at all. It dose not explain why they took it off the market. I like others prefer the liquid not the pill.
